i have to give a big shout out to carol p. i definitely pushed her hard to get this one finished…and by pushed i mean that i literally yelled across crowded rooms informing her that she need to get that sample made pronto. she delivered well before the first deadline i gave her, and tragically way after revised deadline (keep in mind i think i originally gave her until the end of the month and then i said that i in fact wanted to see it before the 15th….how do you people put up with me?)

the dish, june 09

the dish….june 9….6:30-8:30pm

speaking of peer pressure, i called chlc during finals week to inform her that she was going to be teaching a knitted bracelet class in june. she came home and made one right away….i love it! (come to think of it, she didn’t even argue with me….maybe i have persuasive powers i didn’t know about)

knit 4 ur wrists

knit 4 ur wrists….june 13…….1-3pm

tara finished her skirt…it took her two years but she totally rocked it out. also if you know tara at all then you can be aghast about the fact that it took her two years to do this…i mean she is lightning fast with those needles…lets just say that i won’t even try to make one of these.

tara has a pretty skirt

look at tara twirl!

do a twurl on the catwalk!

here is some updated pics on my balcony garden.

i’ve picked up my knitting for the first time since before finals and i’m enjoying my first cup of true “yarn” coffee in weeks. life could not get any better at the moment. so to spread these good vibes i’m feeling i have updated the knit 1 help many page so it now contains miss patty’s recipe for the cinnamon crispies (or “elephant ears”) apparently they were all the rage at the knit out. enjoy. 8)

the domestic undertow

if you’re not careful it will suck you down. if you know me, than you may know of my recent attempt to stop hanging on to my gypsy lifestyle and relax into my new-found permanence here in hutch….this has been a somewhat more difficult process than i had ever anticipated. alas, now that i am no longer planing my wardrobe on what i can fit into a suitcase, there is a certain amount of domesticity that i must start practicing. and i do mean practice, cause none of this stuff comes to me naturally and my learning curve is steep.

my recent endeavor included actually living in all the rooms of my apartment…i’ve always had a roommate and i’ve never lived in one place longer than a year, so this is not really a weird as it sounds. i decided that i have all of this porch space, and this nifty swing…now that i’ve been living here a year i should totally use it right? i thought..hey i should, like plant something.

now planting stuff has always been a hobby that i have avoided like the plague…my thumbs have turned multiple colors before but never any shade of green. my family, on the other hand, are plant people. i’m the only one who didn’t go to college to become a agriculture phenom. i personally don’t believe in planting anything that you can’t eat, so no peonies for me.

cue the entrance of the over-achiever! cindy has convinced me to plant several things, and if she has anything to do with it, by gum its going to be done right! so with all the gusto that cindy brings to everything, she showed up at yarn with pots and soil and cages…all to be assembled in some fashion on my porch. when we were finished, and after i had enjoyed a glass of bourbon with a shot of sprite i was feeling pretty proud.

P5090004

this is cody…he is from what-up-hutch…also he was our camera man for the webcast..you of course have already watched it, but just in case you haven’t and you want to make me happy, click here

P5090010

heather finished the afghan…look how freaking sweet it is…next time you see her tell her that you think her afghan is freaking sweet.

P5090026

this day was so awesome that debbie’s mom even came. p.s. i love the matriarchal figures i get to collect just by hanging out here.

P5090021

let me tell you, i was a cute kid..but never this cute, maybe it’s because i refused to wear “girly” stuff. amanda’s little girl was too precious in this dress.

P5090017

 look we’ve spotted knitters!

P5090016

bob came to serinade us..we were all very impressed. he even learned a song about knitting from fraggle rock! here are the lyrics

P5090014

fiber felting was a huge hit…and it was fun. how can you not have fun with wet soapy animal fur when your instructors are cindy and her special helper miss patty?

P5090007

more knitters! i love that our day included every level of knitter. we had masters like the ladies above and we had people learning to knit for the very first time.

P5090005

mr. fast had an ingenious system of lighting this grill. i’ll give you a hint…he wouldn’t show debbie for fear of her safety. a big thanks to the wonderful gentlemen who cooked for us!

P5090030

this is claire and cindy…notice how much work claire is doing. it should be noted that i offered to help claire, but she rejected me for cindy.

P5090032

 i love this picture

P5090035

in my effort to help cindy cross things off her bucket list we arranged a motorcycle ride with mr. fast. they are bad..bad to the bone. *please note the pink flip flops she is wearing…i suppose we would feel all cool and rebellious if we wore safety gear, would we*

knitting queen

and as for our newbie knitter…i think we can call the experiment a success. this picture is from her facebook page, which if you knew kelsey you would know that’s some mighty high praise. it was a great day, and i’m so grateful to everyone who helped make it happen. cheers y’all…..shannon

in case you missed it…

Final Lace Class Update

So I came into the shop today to relieve Miss Shannon and, after the initial salutations, asked what my assignments were for the rest of the day.  Shannon said:

  • You can pick out new colors of cotton yarn because we’re almost out.
  • You can get on the phone and order the yarn from the distributors.
  • You can pick out some yarn for the Primo scarf class that Janie R. is teaching on Saturday.
  • You can write a blog entry.

Here’s my progress so far.  Jean R. and I had a great time picking out cotton colors.  We have a very nifty little list ready to go.  The bad news is that the companies that we’re ordering from are on the east coast, it’s 4:25 p.m. and everyone in that time zone is done working for the day.  Someone else gets the fun of doing the ordering tomorrow.  As for picking out yarns for the Primo scarf – I’m a technical knitter, what can I say. Picking out colors takes me forever and Shannon has informed me that Mary Ellen (interior designer extrordinare) has chosen the yarns for the first five kits.  She’s a hard act to follow and I’m sure that the any kit I would design would sit on the bench like the last kids chosen for the dodge ball game while hers would be first string.  Let’s just say I’m procrastinating this item on the to-do list because I’m a little intimidated.  Yes, even seasoned knitters get intimidated.

However, I can blog and I want to share how proud I am of our brave group of lace knitters.  Our final class was last Thursday (though we’re going to have a make up class – - – or a reunion tour, we haven’t decided which) and it does my heart good to see how far these intrepid women have come.  They are no longer intimidated by charts, they understand short rows intimately, and stitch markers are their friends.  Their projects, though not completed, are coming along beautifully and they are seeing their perserverance bear fruit.  Best of all, they are much better at reading their knitting - understanding by looking at their work where they are in their pattern and how to correct their mistakes.  As their humble instructor, I find all of this just way too cool.  They are my new heroes.

In my other business, I work with nonprofits – a rewarding life filled with people and organizations that constantly amaze me with their depth of committment to community.  Over the years I’ve logged many hours in board meetings – some great, some agonizingly painful.  My friend Killis once told me, “If no one dies, it’s a good board meeting” because the work in some of those gatherings is just that difficult.  I can say without reservation that this lace knitting class was hard work for everyone but I’m happy to report that no one died in the process – though there were impalements, much swearing, high stress levels, and lots of ripping back to life lines and even back to the beginning of projects.  In fact, I was delighted by everyone’s great sense of humor (even the self-deprecating kind), mutual encouragement/assistance (”try it this way”) and willingness to Jump off the cliff and try something new and challenging.  You did GREAT ladies!  Oh, and the beer Shannon and Jan brought to class didn’t hurt either.

I wish some of the organizations I worked with in my other life were this supportive and good humored with each other when working through the rough patches.  Hmm, maybe a case of good beer would help . . .
